The rugby codes have quite complex rules compared to AFL and as such really only appeal to people of higher intelligence  who can actually understand the finer points. Whereas the simpler AFL does not require anywhere near as high intelligence to follow. There are far fewer of us with the higher intelligence to understand rugby and most of us would rather spend our time studying the stars through a telescope. Consequently AFL has greater crowd appeal!
