Off to a flying start here. I find that checking densities with mosaics is easier the further from the screen you are. I know that sounds daft, but bring up your pic on the screen, then walk back a few paces, and take a look, you can normally see more easily the inconsistencies.
The other part you already know, tuning, tuning, and more tuning. That and practice.
