Regarding the smc, lmc and milkyway visibility. From my home I can see them on a good clear night. But not clearly. I do have to use some sort of adverted imagination to see them stand out. The LP filter will help a great deal (actually looking to get one myself soon). I guess that's why I tend to travel to my darker site out at Sanderston to do any sort of serious viewing. Looking towards the north is a bit darker than south from here, but we still get affected by the lights of Golden grove to the east and Elizabeth to the north... sigh.... I think if your into video astronomy, it wouldn't be too bad...
