I've had the same issues with gmail lately, under IE9 on WIN7, and IE8 on XP. I suspect Google is making changes quite often that aren't supported by IE versions.
I installed Chrome and it worked fine (funny that). After a few days I tried IE again and it was working fine on both machines. Google keep saying that IE will soon be an unsupported browser.
