An 85mm f/1.8 USM lens (perfect portrait lens on a 35mm system) can be had for about $360 (if not less). A pittance compared to what we spend on gear.
It's also one of the sharpest non-L-series lenses available. As I've mentioned before, fashion magazine covers have been shot with that lens.
