Now, imagine what a D800 could do modded?? Holy cow. I have an idea about turning a D800 into a super astro camera but it'd be an expensive experiment. You know it has 57% QE despite being one shot colour? That's almost the same as my FLI Proline at 60%.

Thanks Marcus - I've taken the CLS-CCD filter out of the train, and the star colours are much better, previously they were only blue or white.
I think (but should probably do some research first!) that the Nikon has a lower passband in the red end than the Canon, as it seems to do a better job of H-alpha than Canons. Of course, that is only a hypothesis based on the D800's ability to pick up plenty of red, and I'm happy for someone else to dig up the filter characteristics and prove me wrong.
