It might be from an an estate. The executors sometimes don't know what to do with stuff, or just can't afford to put the time into finding homes for it all. My brother and I have been through this the past couple of years with our parents home in Brisbane. No telescopes but we started with all the good intentions of donating a lot of furniture to charity. But we found they wouldn't take it or would have a 6-8 week wait before they'd even come around to look at it to tell us if they wanted any of it.

We donated what we could but ended up putting sledge hammers to a lot of it to break it up to go in a skip. I can well imagine old large clunky telescope mounts are not that easy for relatives who don't know about them to re-home.
