It was canned to please the Americans,who wanted to sell the F111 to the UK, and also some shady deal that allowed the Concord to be constructed.
The biggest Irony was Britain did not get the F111 also because of cost over runs, and in cancelling it costing over $100 million dollars in cancellation fees and finishing up with the Mcdonald Douglas Phantom instead, which put the British Military Aircraft industry in a tail spin for many years.
