Layers
The beautiful beehive domes of the Bungle Bungles are made of sandstone, the sediment of an old river bed laid down in layers over 300 million years ago, eroded into the current dome shapes. The alternating orange and grey stripes give the area it's common name - the "beehive domes".
The orange bands consist of oxidised iron compounds, whereas the grey bands are composed of cyanobacteria growing on the surface where moisture accumulates.
