Found my first galaxy!!
Hi all.
I just bought a 10" dob from a fellow Ice In Space member - it's my first telescope even though I have been interested in astronomy since I can remember (very slack on my part).
Anyway, after the obligatory week of bad weather Melbourne has really turned it on with a string of clear nights.
Last night I was out and managed to find my first ever galaxy (apart from the MW, LMC and SMC of course) - NGC253! I've got Sky Safari on my phone and using it to get to the general area, I searched around a bit and then there it was - a beautiful elliptical smudge - confirmed by checking the surrounding stars on Sky Safari. I was amazed by how bright it was, actually, considering I'm in highly light polluted skies.
I also saw many nebulae and clusters, but NGC253 was the highlight of the night for me. As you may be able to tell I was very excited!
