A bit late, but yesterday (Feb 15th) was Galileo's birthday.. He was born in Pisa, Italy on Feb 15th 1564.
He was a pioneer in many astronomical areas, discovering the 4 brightest moons of Jupiter (we term them the Gallilean moons) and also made some early drawings of sunspots.. here's an example:
