Understatement of the year... I take extreme care with my equipment. I suspect everyone else does as well.
Normal wear and tear for astronomical equipment generally means dust, maybe some dew spots for those who observe from tropical locations and the occasional scratch on an irrelevant surface. Second hand is a great way to save money.
BTW: the recommendation on the Dob is the best one for a Uni Student. You will be observing ad-hoc and you will want something that's very transportable and fast to setup / tear down...
