You might be thinking of Schwassmann Wachmann 3. Due to peak around mag 2.7 if we're lucky. Hale-Bopp peaked around magnitude -0.7 although as mentioned favoured the northern hemisphere.
But don't let that put you off. Some of the "prettiest" comets were not always the brightest. T7 Linear was a beauty with amazing detail in the tail.
