Hey Graham,
a basic but very useful skill is the use of a soldering iron. You can buy these fittings for very little, and a roll of 2-flex wire and make up your own cables in lengths to suit yourself.
They're as easy as chips to use and you'll be able to solder all sorts of things together - the kitchen clock, lawn mower, the cat - the list is endless.
