We astronomers tend to spend a lot of time outside at night and are bound to see a really good shooting star at some stage. I once saw one fly over and explode behind a mountain range 100 kms away. It lit the range up like daylight. We thought it was an atomic bomb or something weird had happened. It was in the papers the next day, seen 150 kms away and exploded over the ocean.
