Maybe a pair of cheap Binos off ebay, or 2nd hand? You'd be surprised how useful they can be, beats taking a telescope to middle of nowhere any day
Otherwise consider a 1mW green laser from ebay?
A friend of mine bought one (It's 1mW so not illegal) and you can see the beam quite clearly. When viewed from the side though you can't see it, which is great so no one can get a bit uncomfortable seeing a green line from your backyard every night
