Thanks very much everyone.

David - i believe there are a number of amaterur and professional organisations that continually search out new supernovae. I guess once one has been found, it is sent to the professionals to verify its occurence from existing data, and indeed, make a determination that it is where it appears to be.....then of course, is the matter of it getting brighter.

I have an earlier image of NGC 1365, and it certainly is not in there.
