Yes the IR transmitter has to be in the general direction of the IR on the camera, similar to using a tv remote.

But this can be overcome if you make an extended DIY IR transmitter cable which you can attached to the scope, allowing your Iphone etc to be in your hand or attached to the mount leg etc. Or you can get commercial extension cables from ebay etc fairly cheap, the example pic shows a 50ft cable.

But I have no problems using it from side on and to the front slightly.
