The 100 ED is as close as you'll get to apochromatic in the (brand new) price range.
A common mod is a Moonlite or FeatherTouch focuser which improves "handling" no end.
However at this money you might also look at the Sharpstar/Astro-tech 106. At f6.5 it's faster than the SW100 ED but it has great optics and can be pushed to f13 whithout grief.
