That lens is the kit lens on the 7D, I think. A friend of mine has it and it's a good lens, very sharp, f4.5 is a bit slow though for shooting the stars.
I would add a +1 for the Canon nifty fifty (50mm f1.8), it's cheap and if you stop it down to f2.8 it's sharp.
