An old member of the ASNSW had a farm out near Oberon and a few of the members had access to one of his paddocks anytime - in fact one just turned up.
I remember driving there one Friday night in the rain and by the time I had arrived it had turned into a full thunderstorm. It was late enough so I knew I was on my own at least for that night. Around midnight the weather cleared to one of those fantastic clear dark nights (the kind you associate with the rain washing the dust and stuff out of the sky).
About 2am while bent over the scope I had a push in the back - turning around all I could see was a large black mass standing between me and my torch (at the table). After some tense moments, including trying to talk to the whatever, I suddenly realised I had left the gate open and one of his cows had come in to check out the intruder! A possible heart attack situation!
