Yes they are a problem. It always seems to happen when you turn the computer on to check something in a hurry and find you need to wait 10 mins while it installs the last lot of updates.
I normally turn automatic updates off and leave it set to notify me but for some reason or other it often seems to revert to automatic when I least want it.
