Pretty cool idea Silv!
On-board processing would be highly preferred;
the better option would probably be auto stacking multiple short exposures. This should help a little with pattern noise as well as different pixels will get used each frame for the same scene (as the earth rotates between frames).
Because you have direct access to the camera, no compression takes place before you can get your hands on the output. From there it is easier to create dark frames, remove hot- and dead pixels and get an overall higher quality output.
I'm actually a mobile developer by trade but between the daytime job and StarTools lack the time to do this.
