I recall reading that earth climate was significantly changed by the position of land masses due to tectonic activity. Every time there was a large land mass at the poles water was trapped in ice. Then it's a chain reaction. More ice > higher albedo > more ice until everything gets a lot cooler. Also the orbit around the sun was a lot more excentric than it is now and that might compound with other factors.
