I've mostly avoided asthma but my father was a very bad asthmatic. He was hospitalised a few times and I have very strong memories of fearing he would die. It's horrible watching someone struggle for breath. So you have my complete sympathy.
Asthma can be caused or triggered by many things - or combinations of things. Junk food scarcely existed in those days and certainly wasn't within our budget. But there was spray paint and fine particulates at work, dust mites at home, pollen in the garden and overarching financial stress. Once he fell ill any of these things could set him off. He then developed exthma and at one point was allergic to his own sweat. Of course there are behavioural measures one can take, including diet, but there is no silver bullet.
