MtCootha is great only if you like light pollution and glare from the bright city.
I suggest going over the mountains and further west. Gatton or if possible further near Toowoomba or even south of Toowoomba. The QLD astrofest is out past Kilcoy north of Brisbane but that's a bit longer than 2 hours though it's far away from the city lights.
