For the last few weeks I've been looking online for some good star gazing spots in Melbourne, and things to look out for in the night sky, because I want to take my girlfriend out for a night as I think it's something she would really enjoy.

Basically I am just wondering where some good places to go in Melbourne would be, either in the northern suburbs or the Gippsland area. I am obviously aware of city glow, but I was thinking of somewhere out past Hurstbridge?

I was also wondering if there are any upcoming events that I should be on the lookout for, such as meteor showers. And would it be worthwhile to invest in a pair of binoculars?

Thank you for your advice
Binoculars are a great way to observe the night sky. If you can't get out of Melbourne I would suggest learning the whereabouts of the 20 or 25 brightest stars, sky hopping becomes much easier after this.
All the best, John (another Newbie)
