Have to agree with you Peter on all points ( except Autostakkert but only because I haven't tried it ).
I took my 80mm Achro in to work and although we only got about 30-40 minutes of viewing over the whole day in between clouds the amount of interest it generated was amazing. I had a young girl at work with a similar sort of comment to your old gent. And I got a lot of 'Thanks for bringing it in, that was cool " stuff. All worth while.
And of course the misconceptions " Can we look now?" no, the clouds are in the way ....' but you said we could ..."
Comments about dirt on the lens ... sunspots ...
I never took a single pic, even afocal. Just watching with others was enough.
And yes, a camera with a bigger FOV ( cheap ) would just be too awesome ..
