There will always be I site for astronomers in Australia now. I saw a break-away forum set up in less than an hour once. Amazing (but easier than you think, forum templates like this one are available free). It's now a lot more popular than the original too.
Same circumstances. Private site originally, now it's on yahoo and public, no one owns it. The moderators come and go and it lives by itself. This is the most common and most successful forum model.
Having said that I still think iceinspace is great if I love it for what it is and not for what it isn't.
