I have a portable generator I keep in a Faraday cage. I'll just pull in 200 litres of petrol when the power IS working - I reckon most essential services will have their own generators.
If I'm in UK (my alternative base), I have a liveaboard Canal Boat with a generator and stove (diesel and wood respectively). I doubt I'll be in dire straits.
