I'm a westy too - you'll find there are a few folks from around the northern/western suburbs of Melbourne, and they're a friendly bunch
The ASV have their monthly meeting at the Botanic Gardens, but they also have a dark sky site at Heathcote for members to use.
I also highly recommend the drive to Snake Valley for a camp or a club night. They're always great fun.
