Martin, because I have the 60mm solarmax I have to watch out for flat spots in the image detail. So what I do is put the camera in focus and then adjust the etalon to get the best looking field with an even illumination. It takes a little practice but it does not take long to work out what looks best.
Using a darkened box with a towel over your head helps to see the fine changes in tone of the image.
