The myriad of other options such as download.cnet.com and softonic.com are often third-party websites (unrelated to Google) that make money off advertising. I've found that it's usually best to avoid these because what you download may be bundled with unwanted "goodies" that you either don't need (e.g. random toolbars for your web browser), or does harm to your computer (spyware, malware, etc).
