I did these in DPP with all settings zeroed. They don't show the structure of the noise as well as viewing the raws directly in DPP though. The most obvious improvement is less reds in the noise, you can see that best in the dark hills in the distance. Not sure I can put a figure on overall improvement though. Just looking at the raws maybe 1/2 a stop overall is a better estimate? Interested to know what others think?
thanks Colin!

having maintained realistic expectations about how much an already great sensor could be improved, i'm impressed with what Canon have been able to do. the reduction in red noise is quite nice to see.. will help maintain colour balance in the images/timelapse etc. i think your estimate of 1/2 stop is reasonable.. but with the different noise characteristics it is very subjective as you suggest. i think the improved autofocus will make a much bigger difference to my (very) occasional bird photography though!

i should have expected that H . but don't worry.. i'm planning on giving it a try when i get back home eventually! am very interested to see what the lens corrections can do to star quality at f1.4! my main problem at the moment is that i'm only travelling with a netbook.. raw files are hard work whatever the software!
