So how much are replacement elements? How often? What happens to the waste water - down the drain? What is the quoted performance ie conc of F Cl SO4 in vs out? How do you stop microbes breeding in the system?

BTW my feeling is that if F is in sufficient conc to fume the HF formed in the water would kill you quicksmart. It's the Cl that may fume, especially if you are near the treatment plant. They need to add enough Cl at the plant to make sure the conc is above the level necessary to kill microbes at the far end of the line. Otherwise you may swap slow morbidity from the Cl to quick death from the microbes. Being in Sydney this probably isn't an issue but where the water supply is not well filtered before clorination there is a considerable problem from the formation of organo-chlorides, and they can be nasty.
