I think it is just a Wild West story really.
Although many American states now issue 'concealed carry' permits with few restrictions (you can't be a felon etc), which allow people to walk around with handguns on them, they also have an offence there called 'brandishing', which means that you can't draw the gun and wave it around just to make your point. It is apparently only allowed to protect your life or that of another.
So this fellow if he had been real, would have been liable to arrest himself, and to defend his actions. It has happened. I read of an American granny who saw several men outside her back door. She got her gun and brandished it at them through the glass. Naturally they disappeared, but were soon replaced by police, who did a bit of their own brandishing.
It turned out these men were cable linesmen who had been unable to get granny to answer the front door bell. They had imputed permission by contract to come on the property. Granny was charged, convicted, and had her gun license cancelled.
Anyway, I'm going quiet now on this.
