In the 1950's I think. I was still going to school. But at least I had made my first telescope and discovered Jupiter's moons.

The telescope: cardboard postal type tube about 1 1/2" in diameter
a spectical lens about 24" focal length
Some Box Brownie view finder lenses for an eyepiece
The main camera lens used for the erection of the image
all mounted in another cardboard tube that could slide in
and out of the main tube.

The trouble with you young whipper-snappers is you don't listen to your elders!
