If you are getting a kit, then Barlow is not really required, as the kit would have a selection of FL to work with. But if you buy premium EPs, chances are you will only have 2-3 and a Barlow is a cheap way to double their range.
As for filters, they work best in dark sites. A moon filter is very useful, go for the neutral density (ND) types.
