Hi Gary,
There was an article that appeared in the Electronics "Australia"? magazine around 1956. (give or take a few years).
It mentioned the first transistor. Germanium substrate. The concluding comment was that, " it would not eventuate to anything significant".
Semi conductor technology has almost taken over completely from the thermionic valves.
Interesting stories in that lot Gary.
