From memory, you get a choice of manual update or automatic update when you originally down load the App in the first place.
My Android phone then gives me a list of apps that have updates available whenever I log into the Android Market.
Those set for automatic update, update automatically.
But those that are set for manual update, presents a list that you can accept or reject.
Thats how mine works anyway.
