The difference being there was truth in Y2K having the potential to cause computer grief.
We had to start making provision for it by 1985 so that files we legally had to retain for 14 years didn't get deleted by expiry dates wrapping to 1900 and getting automatically cleaned up.
Nothing significant happened because lots of attention had been applied to the potential problems.
