Liz,
I've tried several software packages like Gimp, Photoshop, etc to do my processing but I now almost exclusively use StarTools. It has everything I need, is easy to use and will produce images that I could only dream of when I was using Gimp and Photoshop. That's not to say I couldn't produce the same image with those software packages but it's a hell of a lot easier using StarTools!
Just my 2 cents worth!
