Great effort Paul.....there is more to M42 than just the core mate,so look at the area surrounding the core as well before you even look at the core.
Step 1: duplicate image.
Step 2: stretch image to reveal all the surrounding dust.
Step 3:Stretch the duplicate to reveal fine detail structure around the core and keeping an eye on stars....at the moment there very clipped.
Step 4: Blend the fine detail from the Duplicate image to the hard stretched image.
Step 5: stretch the short sub exposure for the core to reveal good structure in the trap.
Step 6: combine trap to step 4 blended image.
