It's typical of "professionals" who treat those without the qualifications and standing with scorn. Plus the interests of the financial side being taken into consideration as well, if they want to keep next years funding, they'll ride roughshod over anyone else that "gets in their way". You may have been remiss in not reporting the discovery straight away, but that shouldn't make any difference at all.
One day, a professional observatory/institute is going to do the same thing to an amateur and that amateur is going to go to town on them. It may even boil down to a law suit, if they're miffed enough.
