Reminds me of one of the tasks I did on HMAS Perth before safety procedures were rigidly enforced.

I climbed to the top of the mast and removed the cover from the URD-4 aerial by cilmbing above the small platform and onto the base of the mast. No safety harness. Only about 20 metres above the deck but a fall from 20 metres can do just as much harm as 1000 meters.

PS Why did I do it. Because to fix an internal connection that could be accessed by just lifting the dome the job could be done in 30 minutes.

The official way was to remove the aerial. A job that took 7 trades and a week of organising!
