If the imperfections are small, render unto Caesar what is Caesar's use a little mortar with some PVA (wood glue) in it. If they're likely to spall off, use an epoxy filler and sand back after - Application of finish should include a decent primer - it's going to be out in some harsh sunlight and it will get quite hot on one side whilst still being cool on the other.
