I'm happy to report that the firmware update did the trick and the mount worked very well tonight - once I synced on the moon it tracked near perfect for several hours. Even slewed around and got Jupiter in the field of view of the video camera I had on the back! Tried it on some other objects but there was some light cloud as well as heavy light pollution so will have to wait for another night to see how it goes.
Just have to work on the balancing now, and then look at getting a laptop talking to it.
