I had a similar problem with my receiver as well, The official term is the "Horn".
We had sheet lightning go off right above our house last year and completely fried it. The symptoms were very similar to what you described.
Thankfully I have a three year warranty on all parts so it was replaced free of charge, still took them about three weeks to get around to it though.
