So what is the largest possible star by diameter?
Roberta Humphreys (University of Minnesota) estimated the size of VY Canis Majoris to be as much as 2100 solar diameters. She says the largest stars are cool supergiants. VY Canis Majoris has a surface temperature of only 3500 degrees Kelvin.
She believes the largest possible star has a temperature around 3000 degrees Kelvin and would have a diameter 2600 times the Sun.
