IMHO, the best beginners scope is an 8" dob for the following reasons

- inexpensive, the Bintel version is $500
- easy to use and setup
- decent aperture while still being portable
- collimation is easy, and works OK if not perfectly collimated
- no electronics or motors to go wrong
- can later on be mounted on an EQ mount for a very basic imaging scope
